The 8 destinations on our radar for 2026 — from Maldives overwater villas to Monaco grand prix weekends
How We Pick Destinations
Every January we sit down with a blank map and a simple question: where do we genuinely want to spend our time and money this year? We are not chasing Instagram trends or press-trip invitations. We fund every trip ourselves, and that changes the calculus. A destination earns a spot on this list only when the accommodation quality, the food scene, the ease of getting there, and the overall value justify the price tag. We also weigh how a place has evolved since our last visit — some destinations improve year over year while others coast on reputation.
For deeper dives into specific locations, check our dedicated guides at /journal/maldives-luxury-guide and /journal/amalfi-coast-luxury-guide. If you are weighing whether to book a villa or a hotel at any of these destinations, we cover that decision in detail at /journal/private-villa-vs-hotel.
The Maldives
The Maldives remains our number-one recommendation for couples seeking complete seclusion. The overwater-villa concept has been copied everywhere from Bora Bora to the Maldives’ own neighbours in the Indian Ocean, but nowhere else delivers the combination of reef access, butler service, and sheer silence. We visited the North Malé Atoll last November and were reminded why this destination keeps pulling us back. The water clarity was staggering — we could spot reef sharks from the villa deck without polarised lenses. Transfers remain the biggest logistical headache: seaplane schedules are weather-dependent and delays of two to three hours are common, so always build in a buffer day.
Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast in shoulder season — late April or early October — is a different animal from the July madness. We drove the coastal road from Sorrento to Ravello with almost no traffic last autumn and spent three nights in a clifftop villa above Praiano. The key to enjoying this stretch of Italy is timing and accommodation. Skip Positano in peak summer. Book a private terrace with a view, rent a boat for the day, and eat at family-run trattorias up in the hills where a four-course lunch with local wine costs less than a single pasta dish on the Positano beachfront. We cover villa picks and logistics in our dedicated Amalfi Coast guide.
St Barts
St Barts is the Caribbean at its most refined. The island is tiny, the beach-to-restaurant ratio is generous, and the French culinary influence means even a casual lunch involves real technique. We spent New Year’s here two years running and can confirm: the festive-season prices are eye-watering but the vibe is genuinely worth it if you can afford the premium. Outside of December and January, rates drop by forty percent and the beaches empty out. Our pick is the hillside above Flamands for privacy, or Gustavia harbour if you want to be in the social mix.
Seychelles
The Seychelles offers something no other island destination can match: granite boulder beaches that look like a film set, combined with Creole cuisine that is genuinely exciting. We stayed on Praslin and took a day trip to La Digue last March. The snorkelling at Anse Lazio was the best we have experienced outside the Maldives, and the pace of life is blissfully slow. Getting there involves a connection through Dubai or Doha, which makes it a natural pairing with a Gulf stopover.
“A destination earns a spot on this list only when the accommodation quality, the food scene, and the overall value justify the price tag.”
Monaco
Monaco during the Grand Prix is a spectacle unlike anything else in motorsport. We attended in 2025 and spent three nights at a terrace apartment overlooking the harbour turn. Yes, it is expensive — a simple hotel room triples in price during race week. But the combination of world-class racing, superyachts stacked three deep, and restaurants that raise their game for the occasion creates an atmosphere that justifies one splurge trip. Outside of the Grand Prix window, Monaco is a pleasant base for exploring the Côte d’Azur without the chaos.
Bali (Private Villa Belt)
Bali’s Canggu-to-Ubud corridor has matured into one of the best private-villa destinations on the planet. We tested three villas in the 300-to-500-euro-per-night range and found staffing levels, design quality, and included breakfasts that would cost triple in the Mediterranean. The catch is the travel time — it is a long-haul destination from Europe. But if you are planning two weeks or more, the value proposition is hard to beat. Santorini
Santorini in late September is our sweet spot. The cruise ships thin out, the light turns golden, and the caldera views are every bit as dramatic as the photos suggest. We stayed in Oia and spent mornings hiking the path to Fira, afternoons at a volcanic-sand beach, and evenings watching sunsets that genuinely live up to the hype. The wine scene is underrated — Assyrtiko from volcanic soil is one of Greece’s best-kept secrets.
