Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and the resort coast in between — a luxury traveller's guide to the Riviera Maya.
The Lay of the Coast
The Riviera Maya runs south from Cancún along Mexico's Caribbean edge, and it packs an unusual amount of variety into a short stretch. Playa del Carmen is the lively heart, with a walkable beach town and easy access to the resort belt. Tulum, further south, trades polish for bohemian-chic beach clubs and jungle design. In between sits a string of all-inclusive resorts — Ocean Maya Royale for adults-only calm, Ocean Riviera Paradise for families and couples under one roof — fronting some of the region's best beaches. We frame the all-inclusive choice in our Caribbean all-inclusive guide.
Choosing Your Base
Where you stay shapes the pace. A resort near Playa del Carmen keeps you close to dinners and day trips while still delivering the beach; a property further south feels more secluded. We tend to favour the adults-only resorts when it is just the two of us and the family-friendly properties when travelling with others, and we always book up a suite category for the swim-up or oceanfront difference. If a group villa is on the table instead, our villa versus resort guide lays out the trade-offs.
“The Riviera Maya's gift is range — a world-class beach in the morning, a thousand-year-old ruin by afternoon.”
Beyond the Beach
The Riviera Maya rewards curiosity more than most beach destinations. Swimming in a cenote — a freshwater sinkhole in the jungle — is unforgettable, and the Mayan sites at Tulum and, a little further afield, Chichén Itzá, give the trip real depth. A day on Cozumel delivers some of the Caribbean's finest diving. We pre-book the cenote and ruin tours through a trusted platform to secure smaller-group options and avoid the midday crowds. For how the coast compares with the Dominican and Jamaican alternatives, see our Punta Cana and Jamaica guides.
