Christmas markets in Europe 2026: official dates and hours for Vienna, Cologne, Dresden and Nuremberg, the days that catch people out, and how to book a hotel near the market.

By Thomas Lovas Lokoy — researched and drafted with AI assistance, then reviewed, fact-checked and approved by Thomas before publishing. Editorial policy.

The big German and Austrian Christmas markets open between mid-November and late November 2026 and most close on or just before Christmas Eve: Vienna's Rathausplatz market runs 13 November to 26 December, Cologne's Cathedral market 16 November to 23 December, Dresden's Striezelmarkt 25 November to 24 December and Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt 27 November to 24 December. The dates are the easy part. The part that decides how good the trip is comes earlier: booking a hotel within walking distance before the Advent weekends fill, on terms you can cancel.

Every date and opening time below was taken from the market's own website or, for Dresden, the city of Dresden's official call for stallholders, read on 23 October 2026. Organisers occasionally change hours, so check again in the week you travel.

Two dates in that table catch people out. Cologne's Cathedral market is closed on Sunday 22 November, Totensonntag, the German day of remembrance. And Christmas Eve is a half day or less almost everywhere it is open at all: Dresden closes at 14:00 and Vienna at 18:30. If Christmas Eve is the point of your trip, plan the evening somewhere other than the market.

Vienna: the longest season

Vienna's Rathausplatz market describes itself as "one of Europe's biggest and most beautiful Christmas markets", and it has the longest run of the four, opening on 13 November and closing on 26 December. Its ice rink, the Ice Dream, carries on to 6 January 2027, closed on 31 December. The square sits in front of City Hall near the Burgtheater, with trams 1, 71 and D stopping at Rathausplatz/Burgtheater and the U2 metro at Rathaus. That length is useful: a mid-November visit avoids the Advent weekends entirely.

Cologne: beside the cathedral

The Cathedral market on Roncalliplatz has more than 120 decorated stalls, according to its organisers, and stays open until 22:00 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It closes on 23 December, a day earlier than the other three, which matters if you are planning a route.

Dresden: the Striezelmarkt

Dresden's market is run by the city, which published its 2026 call for stallholders on 9 April 2026: the 592nd Striezelmarkt, on the Altmarkt, with 216 stall pitches across 47 trader groups. It opens at 16:30 on Wednesday 25 November and closes at 14:00 on Christmas Eve.

Nuremberg: the Christkindlesmarkt

Nuremberg's market calls itself "one of the oldest and most famous Christmas Markets in the world", a "little city of wood and cloth" known for gingerbread and handmade decorations. It opens with a ceremony at 17:30 on Friday 27 November and runs daily from 10:00 to 21:00 until 24 December.

When to go

Expect the same pattern in every market city: weekday daytimes are calmer than weekend evenings, and the Advent weekends draw the biggest crowds. The practical choices:

  • For atmosphere with fewer people, go Sunday to Thursday and visit the market in the late afternoon, when the lights come on but before the evening crowd.
  • For the widest choice of hotels and prices, travel before the first Advent weekend. Vienna and Cologne are already open from mid-November.
  • For a multi-city trip, the overlap window is 27 November to 23 December, when all four are open. Cologne closes first, on 23 December, so put it early in the route.

Booking the hotel: where the trip is won or lost

In a market city in December, the hotel is the scarce part. Rooms within walking distance of the old town are the ones everybody wants, and prices for peak dates can move as availability shrinks. Four decisions matter more than the brand on the door.

Location first

Choose by walking time to the market square, not by star rating. A four-star room ten minutes' walk from the Rathausplatz or Nuremberg's market square is worth more on a cold evening than a five-star room a tram ride away. On a map, check the walk at night, not just the distance.

Free cancellation versus non-refundable

Book early on a rate you can cancel, then keep checking. A refundable rate costs more, but it lets you lock in a room now and rebook if a better rate appears. A non-refundable rate is cheaper and is the right choice only when your dates are fixed. Our guide to free cancellation versus non-refundable hotel rates sets out how to compare the two properly, and how to get the best hotel rate covers when to book and where to look.

Taxes and charges on the bill

Many European cities add a local accommodation tax to the room rate, charged per person per night or as a percentage, and it is not always included in the headline price you see when you search. Check the final total before you pay. Our guide to city and tourist taxes on hotel bills explains how they work, and what you actually pay at a hotel covers the rest of the bill.

Pay now or pay at the hotel

Some rates take payment at booking, others at the property, and some place a hold on your card in between. If you are booking months ahead, know which one you have chosen; pay now versus pay at the property explains the difference and card holds explains the deposit you may see at check-in.

A four-day route

A simple four-day route that works in the overlap window from 27 November:

  • Day 1, Cologne. Evening at the Roncalliplatz market, open to 22:00 Thursday to Saturday.
  • Day 2, Nuremberg. Afternoon and evening at the Christkindlesmarkt.
  • Day 3, Dresden. The Striezelmarkt on the Altmarkt.
  • Day 4, Vienna or home. Vienna is the natural last stop if you have a fifth day: its market stays open to 26 December, so it suits a later trip as well.

Practical checklist

  • Confirm the market's dates and hours on its own website the week before you go.
  • Book the hotel early on a refundable rate; set a reminder to re-check prices.
  • Check whether city tax is included in the price you are shown.
  • Avoid Sunday 22 November for Cologne; it is closed.
  • Plan Christmas Eve around early closing times.
  • Pack for cold evenings outdoors; you will spend hours standing on stone squares.
  • Keep cash and a card; payment methods vary by stall.
