Loro Piana controls its supply chain at every stage: the herders in Mongolia, the fibre selection, the spinning, the weaving. The result is the finest cashmere available anywhere. We visited the Vercelli mill and the London bespoke atelier.
Cashmere comes from the Changthangi goat, which lives on the Mongolian plateau at altitudes above 3,000 metres. The coldest winters produce the finest underfleece — the fibre that, combed from the undercoat in spring, becomes the raw material for the world's most sought-after textile. Loro Piana pays a premium at source: its buyers visit the herders personally, before the fibres reach the open market.
The Bespoke Programme
The Loro Piana bespoke programme, available at flagship boutiques in London, Paris, Milan, and New York, begins with fabric selection from a cloth book of 300 options. A coat in 100% vicuña — the world's most expensive natural fibre, at around €4,000 per metre — takes six months to produce and costs approximately €35,000. It will last 30 years with correct care.
“Vicuña is not simply expensive cashmere. It is a different material entirely — lighter, warmer, softer, and rarer than anything else that can be made into a coat.”
